Local homes need protection from lime scale

12 January 2006

Over 2 million UK central heating systems broke down in 2003 and a substantial number of those breakdowns were caused by lime scale damage.  Over 60% of households in England have very hard water (which causes lime scale) - only parts of Devon, Cornwall and the area north of Sheffield don't have it - and these are particularly at risk.

Those who live in hard water areas will know that lime scale can clog the pipes of their boiler as well as damage their heat exchanger (the part in the boiler which heats the water in the system).   Domestic & General, unlike many other companies, includes lime scale damage cover of the boiler in their policies so householders have the protection they really need.

Prices usually start from £9.50 per month for boiler only cover and rise to £15 per month for boiler, system and an annual service. Quotes can be obtained by ‘phoning 08705 490000 or visiting www.domgen.com.

John Henry, claims manager, comments “There can be real problems finding a competent and qualified repairer if you don't have a breakdown plan, especially during cold snaps. Domestic & General's nationwide independent network of monitored service agents is long established and each repair is carefully monitored. Householders with heating protection plans may think they are covered for all eventualities but a number of plans do not cover damage by lime scale. It can pay to check."
