Local youngsters are stars of D&G Aboriginal art film

March 2010

Children from two local schools have been involved in the creation of a film and published book responding to a large collection of Aboriginal art held by Domestic & General (D&G) at their Worple Road offices.

The collection was purchased over many years, initially by the company's founder and continued to grow through the original owner's descendants. These paintings represent a high quality survey of the major trends in Aboriginal art. In response to this D&G commissioned a project to document the art in film and print, working with children from Wimbledon Chase and Raynes Park High schools.

Both the film Fitzroy Crossing to SW19 and photo-book Dreamtime Stories contain a selection of the work of three classes from these schools, ranging from nursery to year eight pupils. Working together with The Engine Room at the University of the Arts, London, pupils experimented and created their own paintings using techniques learned from Aboriginal artists. The pupils also enjoyed a visit to the D&G office to see these paintings in the space in which they hang.

The premiere screening of Fitzroy Crossing to SW19 took place at the D&G office on Thursday 11 February 2010, with attendees including representatives from the schools and The University of the Arts London. A selection of the children's artwork will be displayed permanently in D&G's head office and children will be able to enjoy seeing their work in print and on screen in the copies of the book and DVD presented to them.
